About invasive species
Invasive or alien species are animals (with or without backbones, including disease microbes) or plants that have colonised ‘new’ areas and are causing harm.
There are few environments anywhere – whether terrestrial, freshwater or marine – where invasive species are not present. Around the world, the ecological impacts of invasive species are immense, insidious and increasing.
New Zealand, which has been dramatically affected, has developed sophisticated and effective responses to invasive species – approaches that are relevant and timely given the international mandate for action to counter alien plants and animals.
